During the summer 1995, the Black Jews of Ethiopia Art and Artifacts Exhibit - a traveling exhibition of photographs, art and daily tools and religious objects - was showcased at the Jewish Community Center on Drake and Maple Roads in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Few people are aware of the fact that the first Jews were Black, and that in modern times, some of the descendents of the original Jews could be found in Ethiopia. This under-reported historical knowledge made exhibit very important. Currently over seventy languages are spoken in Israel. Now a new language has been added to that country. These Jews of Ethiopia were air-lifted out of Africa during two daring missions code named Operation Moses and Operation Solomon. The entire population was relocated to Israel. This airlift took place during Ethiopia's internal civil war in the late 1980s and early 1990s. |
