Detroit Urban League

By Airrion Harris, Wayne County Community College

The Detroit Urban League main office is located on Mack Avenue and Brush Street. This organization was founded in 1916. During the Urban League’s early existence, they helped Black people arriving here from the South. They provided a place for new residents to go for social affairs, for health programs and for recreational activities.

Even today, the Urban League strives to serve the community by offering a variety of programs and services to youth, adults and senior citizens. Their stated mission is “to enable African Americans and other people of color to cultivate and exercise their full human potential.” Urban League programs include an annual “Scholarship Search Festival,” “KIDCO” a youth entrepreneurial program, and “Male and Female Responsibility Programs” which include mentoring and counseling.

Guided tours, literature and program presentations are available at this site.
