Detroit City-County Building at the base of Woodward Avenue houses the City of Detroit and County of Wayne government headquarters. The building's most famous feature is the Spirit of Detroit statue by Sculptor Marshall Fredericks. In Detroit today, African-Americans hold the highest percentage of City Council seats. Although this information is not of great surprise to anyone locally, in the distant past, there were a few Blacks who had also held positions in city-council government. This occurred as far back as the nineteenth century. The gentleman who served for two terms in the 1880s was Dr. Samuel Watson. The first contemporary African-Americans on the Detroit City-Council were William F. Patrick Jr. and Erma L. Henderson. |
