The Lao-Hmong Community Center is located at 14650 Gratiot Avenue. This organization strives to unite Detroit's Lao and Hmong families. They provide services and activities to better their way of life in this community. The Hmong is among the largest growing ethnic group in Detroit. Originally from Laos in Indochina, the Hmong lived in a farming community. After assisting the Americans during the Vietnam War, they became refugees and fled to Thailand. From refugee camps in Thailand, the Hmong eventually came to the United States. They settled in almost every state in America with the majority going to the states of California, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Hmong who resettled in Detroit came because of the automotive industry and the affordable housing. Most were unable to speak the language and unfamiliar with western ways. Many were traumatized by the experiences of war. The community center provides opportunities for fellowship, social activities and youth programs. They participate in multicultural festivals and are excellent quilt makers. Their quilt stitching is intricate and beautiful. |
