The North American Indian Association of Detroit is located at 360 John R. Street in Downtown Detroit. This organization is dedicated to the continuing survival, recognition, and regeneration of American Indians. The NAIA is the oldest urban Indian organization in the United States. It was started in 1940. The original purposes of the group were to provide opportunities for American Indians to meet and enjoy social, recreational, and cultural activities. Job opportunities, job training and placement is an integral part of the program. Always respected in Native American culture and tradition, elders receive special attention and recognition in the NAIA. Social-recreational, food program and emergency pharmaceutical services are available for seniors. Other activities include a mentoring program were adults and youth are paired for the purpose of providing a relationship in which Native American culture and values can be shared and promoted. The North American Indian Association of Detroit sponsors educational forums, social activities, and workshops designed to help maintain cultural skills. An art gallery and crafts shop with authentic Native American goods offer items for sale. A major event each year is the Michigan Indian Day Parade and PowWow. The fourth Friday of September is Michigan Indian Day, a State of Michigan holiday. The NAIA celebrates this occasion in a special salute to the uncon- querable spirit of the Indian Nations of North America. Other Native American community organizations in the Detroit area include the American Indian Health and Family Services Administration and Clinic, South East Michigan Indians, Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre in Windsor, and the Detroit Indian Education and Cultural Center at the Pelham School in the Detroit Public Schools. |
