The Underground Railroad Crossing Site is located at Sixth Street and West Jefferson. It stands directly behind the downtown branch of Wayne County Community College. The area of this underground railroad crossing point is now a small riverfront park. This site is considered one of the more favorite crossing points for the escaping slaves. It was close to several Underground Railroad Stations in the city of Detroit. This site does not have a historic marker, however this area is next to a pedestrian-vehicle overpass. It is easily accessible to the public and a historical marker should be placed there. This overpass connects Fort Street to a luxurious riverfront apartment complex located on the Detroit River. Ironically, Mrs. Rosa Parks, the "Mother of the Modem Civil Rights Movement" and the Honorable Coleman A. Young, a retired Tuskegee Airmen and Detroit's first African-American mayor, are both residents of the Riverfront Apartments. Across the Detroit River, on the Windsor, Ontario side is Riverside Park. A proposed plaque to commemorate the crossing of slaves to freedom in Canada is planned to be placed on a site in their Riverfront Park. |
